Communal Unrest Erupts in Haldwani: Curfew Partially Lifted, 6 Dead, 5 Arrested

In the wake of violent clashes sparked by a demolition drive targeting an “illegally built” madrasa in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, authorities have partially lifted the curfew from outer areas, although tensions remain high following the deaths of six rioters. The turmoil began on Thursday when the district administration initiated the demolition, resulting in a fierce backlash from locals.

The unrest prompted a swift response from authorities, with the imposition of curfew measures and the suspension of internet services in the affected areas to curb further escalation. While some semblance of normalcy has returned to the outer regions, the Banbhoolpura area remains under strict curfew due to the severity of the violence witnessed there.

According to police reports, the demolition notice served to the madrasa, allegedly constructed on government land, acted as a catalyst for the violent outburst. In defiance, a mob obstructed officials and instigated chaos by pelting stones and torching vehicles outside the Banbhoolpura police station.

Law enforcement officials have been actively pursuing those responsible for instigating the violence, with five individuals arrested thus far and a further 19 identified for their involvement, as stated by Senior Superintendent of Police, Nainital, PN Meena. Additionally, over 5,000 individuals have been implicated in FIRs related to the unrest.

Despite efforts to restore order, concerns linger over the potential for renewed violence. The situation remains closely monitored, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage and maintaining a visible presence to prevent any further disturbances. While shops have cautiously reopened on the outskirts, educational institutions remain shuttered as a precautionary measure.

In response to the incident, political figures have weighed in on the broader implications of communal tensions. Samajwadi Party MLA Shivpal Singh Yadav condemned the alleged mistreatment of minorities, warning of public outcry if such incidents persist unchecked.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the violence-stricken area to assess the situation firsthand. Expressing condemnation for the attack, Dhami assured swift legal action against all perpetrators, emphasizing the availability of evidence to facilitate their identification and prosecution.

As Haldwani grapples with the aftermath of the unrest, the focus remains on restoring peace and stability while addressing the underlying grievances fuelling communal discord. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile social fabric and the imperative for concerted efforts to foster harmony and understanding within communities.
