A devastating accident on the Pune-Bangalore Highway in Karnataka has claimed the lives of thirteen people and left four others seriously injured. The incident occurred early Friday morning near Gundenahalli crossing in Haveri district when a mini-bus collided with a stationary truck.
According to police reports, the mini-bus was carrying 17 passengers, all residents of Shivamogga district, who had recently visited Belagavi for a pilgrimage and were returning home. Tragically, eleven individuals, including two young children aged six and four, lost their lives on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital.
“The victims were coming from Chincholi Mayamma Devasthana and heading to their native Yemehatti village in Shivamogga district. The lorry was standing on the side of the highway. The tempo traveller hit the lorry from behind,” explained Anshu Kumar Srivastava, Superintendent of Police (Haveri), in a statement to PTI.
The injured, admitted to hospital, include two individuals in critical condition. Authorities suspect that the accident may have been caused by the mini-bus driver falling asleep at the wheel, although investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting authorities to issue reminders about road safety and the dangers of drowsy driving. Families of the victims and local residents have been left mourning the loss of their loved ones, emphasizing the need for vigilance and caution on the roads.
