The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive searches across Kolkata on Thursday in connection with ongoing investigations into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The searches included the residence of Satya Prakash Ghosh, the father of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college. This action is part of a broader inquiry into alleged corruption and financial mismanagement at the hospital.
The ED, alongside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is scrutinizing the financial dealings of Sandip Ghosh, who has been arrested on corruption charges. The probe also extends to allegations of nepotism and improper awarding of contracts. Akhter Ali, a former non-medical deputy superintendent at RG Kar, was questioned on Wednesday regarding these claims. Ali had previously reported alleged corrupt practices, including the mismanagement of bio-medical waste contracts and irregularities in contract awards.
Recent searches have led the ED to examine multiple properties associated with Sandip Ghosh and his family. Documents related to these properties, which are suspected to have been acquired with proceeds from illicit activities, were reportedly found during searches last week.
The investigation also touched on Sangeeta Ghosh, Sandip’s wife, who held a position as an assistant professor at RG Kar. The ED revealed that she acquired two properties without prior approval from the state government, though retrospective approval was granted in 2021. Sangeeta Ghosh has denied any wrongdoing on the part of her husband.
