Crocodile Crosses Road in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri, Video Goes Viral

A dramatic video capturing an 8-foot-long crocodile casually crossing a rain-soaked road in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, has sent waves of astonishment across social media. The footage, which has since gone viral, shows the reptile calmly navigating the wet terrain, causing a stir among motorists and locals alike.

The crocodile reportedly strayed onto the road after heavy rainfall swept it away from its natural habitat in the nearby Shiva River. The incident unfolded amidst adverse weather conditions that have recently battered the coastal district of Ratnagiri.

“Motorists in Ratnagiri encountered a crocodile that had strayed onto the road following heavy rains on Sunday,” read the caption accompanying the video shared widely on social media platforms. In the video, the crocodile can be seen leisurely strolling across the road, prompting cautious reactions from bystanders.

“Khidki band hai, khidki band hai guys [Window is closed, window is closed, guys],” a man’s voice can be heard cautioning others as the crocodile approaches a vehicle, highlighting the tense moment captured in the footage.

This incident recalls a similar occurrence in 2019 when another 8-foot-long crocodile emerged from a drain in Ratnagiri during heavy rains. Back then, the reptile was safely rescued by local authorities from a roadside drain in the tourist hub of Chiplun. Forest officials explained that such incidents are not uncommon during the monsoon season, especially when heavy rains lead to flooding in the Vashishti River, which flows through Ratnagiri.

Divisional Forest Officer V. K. Surve commented on the recent incident, stating, “This is quite common in this region during the monsoon. We rescued this crocodile safely. Since it had not suffered any injuries, it was released back into the river.”

Authorities and locals remain vigilant during the monsoon months in Ratnagiri, keeping an eye out for unexpected encounters with wildlife displaced by heavy rains. The viral video serves as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable presence amidst human settlements, prompting both awe and caution among viewers.
