In a groundbreaking cross-border wedding, Mohammad Abbas Haider, the son of BJP corporator Tahseen Shahid, tied the knot with Andleep Zahra, a resident of Lahore, through an online “nikah” ceremony. This unique event took place in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the challenges and adaptability faced in international marriages amid political tensions.
The couple’s journey to marriage was fraught with difficulties, particularly concerning visa issues. Despite the groom’s efforts to secure a visa for Pakistan, ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan thwarted these plans. Compounding the situation, the bride’s mother, Rana Yasmin Zaidi, was hospitalized in the ICU, prompting the family to expedite the wedding arrangements.
In light of these challenges, Shahid arranged for the wedding to be conducted online. On Friday night, surrounded by family and friends at an imambara, the groom participated in the virtual ceremony, with the bride’s family joining from Lahore.
Shia religious leader Maulana Mahfoozul Hasan Khan officiated the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of the bride’s consent in Islam. He clarified that an online “nikah” is valid when maulanas from both sides coordinate the ceremony together.
Haider expressed optimism regarding the visa process for his new wife, hoping for a smooth transition to India. The ceremony was attended by BJP MLC Brijesh Singh Prishu and other guests, who extended their congratulations to the newlyweds.
This innovative approach to a wedding amid logistical challenges reflects the resilience of love, transcending borders and navigating complex situations. As the couple embarks on their new journey together, the community celebrates this symbolic union between India and Pakistan.
