Bengaluru Welcomes First Driverless Metro Train for Yellow Line

Bengaluru marks a significant milestone in its transportation sector as the first-ever driverless metro train, comprising six coaches from China, arrived in the city on Wednesday. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced the arrival of the state-of-the-art train, heralding a new era in metro rail services for the bustling metropolis.

The arrival of the driverless train, which arrived at the Hebbagodi depot in Electronic City, South Bengaluru, signifies a major step forward in Bengaluru’s metro network. The city, known for its bustling IT hub, is set to witness enhanced connectivity and efficiency in its public transportation system with the introduction of this cutting-edge technology.

The newly arrived train is designated to operate on the Yellow Line of the BMRCL, covering the route from RV Road to Electronic City via Silk Board. This route is crucial for commuters, connecting key residential, commercial, and IT hubs in the city’s southern region.

Manufactured by a Chinese firm, the train and its coaches are part of a larger contract awarded to the company by the BMRCL. The contract entails the construction of 216 coaches, with the newly arrived train serving as a prototype for future deployments.

An official from BMRCL provided insights into the procurement process, stating, “We have ordered 216 cars of which 90 will operate on Yellow line forming 15 trains. The one which has arrived is a prototype.” This underscores the BMRCL’s commitment to modernizing and expanding Bengaluru’s metro network to cater to the city’s growing population and increasing transportation needs.

As Bengaluru gears up to embrace the era of driverless metro trains, residents can look forward to safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly commuting options. The introduction of this advanced technology is expected to enhance the overall commuting experience while easing congestion on city roads.

With the arrival of the first driverless metro train, Bengaluru takes a significant step towards establishing itself as a frontrunner in urban transportation innovation, setting the stage for further advancements in the city’s public transit system.
