Russian Man's Near-Death Experience: Self-Drilled Brain Chip Surgery Lands Him in Hospital

In a shocking incident reported by Newsweek, a 40-year-old Russian man named Mikhail Raduga nearly lost his life after attempting a self-surgery to install a brain chip using a handheld drill. The dangerous manoeuvre was driven by his desire to control his dreams, and he planned to use the microchip as part of an ambitious experiment.

Sharing graphic images of his audacious attempt on his Twitter handle, Raduga revealed that he had been inspired by videos on YouTube showcasing how neurosurgeons work. On May 17, 2023, he proceeded to perform trepanation, electrode implantation, and electrical stimulation on his brain’s motor cortex in an effort to test brain stimulation during lucid dreaming.

“I needed it to test brain stimulation during lucid dreaming,” Raduga tweeted alongside the pictures on July 18.

The extreme measures taken by Raduga landed him in a perilous situation, as he lost nearly a litre of blood during the four-hour-long surgery. He was rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention and treatment for his injuries.

The images shared by Raduga showed him with multiple bandages on his face, and an X-ray revealed the electrode inside his head.

According to Russia Today (RT), Raduga had been fixated on the idea of installing an electrode in his brain for over a year. His interest in sleep paralysis, out-of-body states, and astral projection led him to choose himself as the test subject for his experiments.

Initially considering the idea of involving neurosurgeons, Raduga eventually decided to undertake the dangerous procedure himself in his apartment due to concerns about potential criminal liability for clinicians performing such surgeries.

While the results of Raduga’s self-surgery may seem extreme and risky, he remains optimistic about the outcome. He believes that the experiment has opened up “fantastic prospects for future dream control technologies.”

This extraordinary incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of self-experimentation in unregulated medical practices and the importance of seeking professional medical guidance and expertise
