Heavy rainfall has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Wayanad and Kannur districts in Kerala, signaling the possibility of extremely heavy rain exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for eight other districts, while the remaining six districts are under a yellow alert.
The northern districts of Kerala, particularly Wayanad, have experienced significant rainfall, leading to incidents of flooding, uprooting of trees, and minor landslides. According to reports, 29 houses in Wayanad have been partially damaged, and over 700 people have been relocated to 22 relief camps due to rising water levels in local rivers.
Expressing concern over the situation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered condolences to the families affected by the adverse weather conditions. He urged Congress workers in Kerala to actively participate in relief and rescue efforts.
“The excessive rain in Kerala is highly concerning – my heart goes out to all those affected. Heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I urge Congress leaders & workers in the state to extend all possible help in relief and rescue operations,” Rahul Gandhi posted on social media.
The IMD has also forecasted moderate rainfall and gusty winds up to 50 kilometers per hour in several districts including Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
