Bengaluru Techies Abandon Cars and Walk Home After Heavy Rains Cause Traffic Chaos

Heavy rains and severe waterlogging in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening resulted in major disruptions, with many commuters forced to leave their vehicles and walk home. The Bengaluru traffic police closed one side of the Electronics City flyover due to the flooding, leading to a massive traffic jam that lasted for over two hours.

As rain continued to pour, commuters became increasingly frustrated with the stagnant traffic. Many shared their experiences on social media, posting pictures and videos of the gridlock. One user described the scene as “complete chaos,” expressing concern over potential medical emergencies amid the traffic standstill. “In this situation, if there is a medical emergency, then there is no chance of survival,” the user lamented, noting that vehicles had been immobilized for nearly 2.5 hours, covering just 2 kilometers.

Another frustrated commuter shared, “Completely jammed for the past 1.5 hours on the #ElectronicCity flyover. I must have reached my home by now, which is 30 kilometers away.” As the wait continued, many techies working in the area began to abandon their cars, opting to walk home instead.

A social media account called Karnataka Portfolio, which provides state-related updates, posted a video showing the slow-moving traffic and pedestrians on the flyover. The post noted that traffic was at a standstill for over two hours, with vehicles backed up from Bommanahalli to Electronic City due to the heavy rain.

Authorities advised motorists to find alternative routes or delay their trips until the situation improved. This incident has reignited calls for better drainage and traffic management in Bengaluru, particularly during the monsoon season.

The ongoing heavy rainfall has not only led to traffic chaos but has also caused significant damage to infrastructure and loss of life. Just a day prior to this incident, an under-construction building collapsed in the Horamavu Agara area of Bengaluru, resulting in five fatalities among the 20 people present at the time.
