A missionary school in Telangana’s Mancherial district faced a violent rampage as a mob vandalized the premises and assaulted staff members after a dispute arose over students wearing saffron attire to campus. The violence erupted at Blessed Mother Teresa High School in Kannepalli village after principal Jaimon Joseph questioned students wearing saffron attire, which is associated with Hindu religious practices. The students explained that they were observing a 21-day ritual called Hanuman Deeksha, but the situation escalated when a video circulated on social media, alleging that the principal was restricting Hindu attire on campus.
Videos from the scene depict a mob of saffron-clad individuals chanting religious slogans and causing destruction at the school. The mob manhandled staff members, including Principal Joseph, and forcibly applied tilak (a religious mark) on his forehead. The protesters also damaged school property, including shattering window panes and defacing a statue of Mother Teresa.
In response to the incident, police have registered a case against two staff members, including the principal, based on a complaint from the students’ parents. The case involves charges related to hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity between different religious groups.
The protesters have demanded an apology from the school administration, further highlighting the tensions and demands for religious tolerance in the area.
