Vijay Shekhar Sharma Deletes Controversial Tribute to Ratan Tata Following Backlash

Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma has deleted a social media post paying tribute to the late Ratan Tata after facing significant backlash for his phrasing, particularly the line “Ok Tata Bye Bye.”

The post was made in the wake of Tata’s passing at the age of 86, a loss felt deeply across the Indian business community. Ratan Tata, former chairman of the Tata Group, was widely recognized for his immense contributions to the Indian industry and his philanthropic efforts. In response to his death, several prominent figures from the tech sector took to social media to express their condolences, including Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, People Group CEO Anupam Mittal, and former Xiaomi CEO Manu Kumar Jain.

However, Sharma’s tribute did not resonate well with social media users. In his original message, he referred to Tata as “a legend who will inspire every generation,” but the concluding line drew ire. Users criticized the casual tone, with comments such as “Intern se likhwaya hoga” suggesting the post was poorly written, and others accused Sharma of trying to stay in the limelight. Following the backlash, Sharma promptly removed the post, but a screenshot of it has since gone viral.

In stark contrast to the controversy surrounding Sharma’s tribute, Ratan Tata’s final rites were conducted with full state honors in Mumbai. Union Home Minister Amit Shah represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently abroad at the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. Shah was joined by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, among others, to pay their respects.

Earlier, Tata’s body lay in state at the National Centre for Performing Arts, draped in the national flag, before being transported to the crematorium in Worli. Maharashtra has declared a day of mourning in honor of Tata, reflecting the profound impact of his life on both Indian society and the global community.
