Rescue operations are in full swing following a devastating landslide in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, which has led to the recovery of seven bodies and the ongoing search for three missing individuals.
Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya confirmed on Saturday that rescue teams have managed to recover seven bodies from the landslide-affected area, while three people remain unaccounted for. The landslide struck the region following persistent heavy rainfall on July 17, leading to extensive damage and displacement.
“We have received reports of 10 people missing, and we have managed to recover seven bodies so far. The search continues for the remaining three individuals,” said Deputy Commissioner Priya. Rescue operations are being conducted by a coordinated effort involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), National Highways Authority (NHA), Navy, Coast Guard, fire services, and local police.
Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Narayan M stated that the rescue efforts are complicated by ongoing landslides and the flow of a nearby river. “The situation is challenging due to continuous landslides and river flow. Our teams are working tirelessly to clear the debris and locate the missing individuals,” he explained.
Union Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy visited the affected Shirur village in Ankola to assess the damage and provide support to displaced residents. Many local residents have sought refuge in care centers as the landslide continues to affect their homes and communities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Uttara Kannada for July 20 and an orange alert for July 21. Similar alerts have been issued for Shimoga, Udupi, and Chikmagalur, highlighting the ongoing risk of severe weather conditions.
