In a shocking incident in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, a 50-year-old US woman was discovered chained to a tree in a forested area, approximately 450 kilometers from Mumbai. The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi Kumar, was found on Saturday after a local shepherd heard her cries and alerted the authorities.
The police have reported that Kumar is in a fragile state and unable to provide a statement due to her weakened condition and prolonged lack of food. She was initially transported to a hospital in Sawantwadi before being moved to Oros in Sindhudurg. Given her severe health and mental condition, Kumar was later transferred to Goa Medical College for advanced care. Medical professionals have diagnosed her with psychiatric issues and have found relevant prescriptions among her belongings.
Authorities have opened a case of attempted murder against Kumar’s former husband, who is alleged to be behind the distressing situation. According to a note discovered at the hospital, Kumar accused her former husband, a Tamil Nadu resident, of chaining her in the forest and abandoning her there. This note has formed the basis of the murder attempt case registered against him.
The police are currently working to verify all documents related to Kumar, including her expired visa and a photocopy of her US passport, to confirm her nationality and the details of her stay in India. As the investigation continues, authorities are also seeking to determine the full extent of the crime and bring those responsible to justice.
