Following the viral circulation of a deepfake video involving actress Rashmika Mandanna, concerns about the dangers of such manipulated content amplified across India.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar disclosed that a pivotal meeting was held on November 24, engaging various social media platforms operating in the country. The session centered on the prevailing laws surrounding deepfakes and the dissemination of these videos via social media. Minister Chandrasekhar emphasized the crucial role of social media platforms in ensuring internet safety and preventing the proliferation of deepfakes. He reiterated that platforms must align their content regulations with Indian laws, holding them accountable for maintaining a secure online environment.

In discussions with PTI, Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted the government’s stance, stating, “The responsibility lies with the platforms to guarantee a deepfake-free internet in accordance with existing laws. Failure to comply may result in the removal of safe harbor protection, enabling platform prosecution if sufficient measures aren’t taken to curb deepfakes.”
