In a landmark event marking the inaugural World Skydiving Day, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat took the plunge into the skies of Haryana, experiencing the thrill of skydiving firsthand. The 53-year-old minister participated in a tandem skydive at Skyhigh, India’s sole civilian skydiving drop zone located at Narnaul airstrip.
Videos capturing the event showed Minister Shekhawat enthusiastically preparing for the dive, receiving instructions before boarding the plane and taking the exhilarating jump alongside an instructor. During the dive, when asked about his experience, he responded with delight, exclaiming “good good, maza aa gaya” (it was fun).
Reflecting on the significance of the day for both aerosports and tourism, Minister Shekhawat expressed optimism about skydiving’s potential to attract tourists to India. “Today is a thrilling day for me, but more importantly, it is an important day for the world and for the world of aerosports,” he remarked after safely landing.
He highlighted the role of aerosports in boosting tourism, noting how Indians who previously enjoyed such activities abroad could now experience them domestically. “I have flagged off India’s first skydiving aircraft and wish great success to the team,” he added.
World Skydiving Day, initiated by leading skydiving associations including the US Parachute Association, Australian Parachute Federation, British Skydiving, and the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association, aims to celebrate the exhilarating experience of skydiving and set a global record for the most jumps on this day annually.
