In a troubling escalation of violence against migrant workers, two individuals from Uttar Pradesh were shot at today in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. The police confirmed that both victims, identified as Usman Malik, 20, and Sofiyan, 25, were promptly taken to a local hospital, where medical staff reported that they were out of danger.
This incident marks the fourth targeted attack on migrant workers in the Kashmir Valley within the last two weeks, raising concerns about the safety of laborers in the region. The latest violence follows a deadly assault on October 20, where terrorists killed seven individuals, including a local doctor and two workers from Bihar, at a tunnel construction site in Ganderbal district.
Authorities have identified one of the two assailants in the Ganderbal attack as a local resident from Kulgam, who had joined a terrorist group in 2023. The second attacker is believed to have infiltrated from Pakistan.
The ongoing violence has prompted fears among the migrant community, as security forces continue to confront threats from armed groups. On Thursday, additional terror activities were reported in the Bota Pathri area of the Gulmarg region, where two soldiers and two porters lost their lives in an engagement with terrorists who have been active in the higher reaches of Afrawat since early August.
The recent surge in attacks highlights the precarious situation for migrant workers in Jammu and Kashmir, who have increasingly become targets for militant groups in a region already grappling with violence and instability. Local authorities are under pressure to enhance security measures to protect these vulnerable communities amid ongoing tensions.
