Mohali Building Collapse: Two Dead, Rescue Operations Ongoing as Authorities Investigate Unauthorised Excavation

A tragic incident unfolded in Mohali, Punjab, on Sunday evening, when a four-storey building collapsed, trapping several people under the rubble. The collapse has resulted in at least two confirmed deaths, with rescue teams working tirelessly to save others still feared to be trapped.

A short three-second video has emerged capturing the moment before the building fell, intensifying the urgency surrounding the rescue efforts. Indian Army personnel and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been on-site for over 17 hours, conducting operations round-the-clock. The building’s collapse occurred in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, near Sohana, and has drawn significant attention across the state.

The victims, identified as Drishti Verma from Theog and Abhishek from Ambala, Haryana, were both caught in the debris. Verma was rescued last night but tragically succumbed to her injuries at the Sohana Hospital. Abhishek’s body was recovered from the rubble this morning.

Initial investigations suggest that the collapse may have been triggered by unauthorised excavation work carried out in an adjacent plot. The building owners, Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh, are under investigation, and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been filed against them.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed his condolences and is closely monitoring the situation. In an online statement, he assured the public that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the mishap, while also appealing for cooperation from residents and authorities to ensure the success of the ongoing rescue operation.

“We are working closely with all agencies involved, and I assure you that justice will be served,” said CM Mann. Authorities are now focusing on ensuring the safety of any remaining survivors and determining the cause of the building’s collapse, which has left the local community in shock.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety regulations in construction, with the focus now on preventing further casualties and holding those responsible accountable.
