A fire that erupted at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) refinery in Koyali, Vadodara, on Monday has resulted in the tragic deaths of two workers. The fire, which began after an explosion in a storage tank, also left two others injured, who are currently undergoing treatment.
The incident, which took place at the Gujarat Refinery, led to a large-scale firefighting response as the blaze quickly spread to two nearby tanks. Vadodara police commissioner Narasimha Komar confirmed the initial explosion caused the fire, prompting emergency services to work through the night to control the flames. By Tuesday morning, firefighters had managed to contain the fire in one of the tanks, although efforts to fully extinguish the blaze in the remaining two tanks continued.
In an official statement on Tuesday, IOC reported that one of the deceased was a contract worker who sustained fatal injuries during the incident. A canteen worker at the refinery, who had fallen unconscious and was rushed to the hospital, later succumbed. IOC noted that the precise causes of the fatalities would be confirmed following post-mortem examinations.
The Gujarat Refinery, established in 1962, processes crude oil into products such as petrol, diesel, LPG, kerosene, and aviation fuel. With an annual processing capacity of 13.7 million tonnes, the refinery primarily supplies petroleum products to Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess any further safety risks within the facility.
