TTD to Implement AI and Facial Recognition for Hassle-Free Darshan at Tirumala Temple

In a move to modernize and streamline the pilgrimage experience at the world-renowned Tirumala temple, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Trust Board has announced plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technologies. The initiative aims to verify genuine pilgrims, eliminate impersonation, and provide a seamless darshan experience.

TTD Executive Officer J Syamala Rao stated that these technologies will ensure enhanced access control, ease of accommodation, and improved operational efficiency across the temple premises. “TTD envisioned adopting the latest technological solutions available in the market including Artificial Intelligence to improve the overall pilgrimage,” he said.

How Will It Work?

Pilgrims will be issued time-slotted darshan tokens embedded with facial recognition data. Upon token issuance, the system will capture and cross-check the pilgrim’s facial features with data from the past 30 days or a database of around 10 lakh images. This measure aims to curb duplicate bookings and prevent impersonation or fraudulent entry.

The facial recognition system will also be deployed across queue lines, compartments, and other critical areas within the Tirumala complex. According to the TTD, this real-time data will help estimate expected darshan times and manage crowd flow effectively. Pilgrims will be notified of their expected darshan slot, helping them plan their movements better and reducing congestion.

“This solution empowers TTD management to precisely assess the probable darshan time expected for the pilgrims waiting and for those joining the queue,” Rao added.

Boosting Security and Efficiency

The TTD board has also approved the deployment of anti-drone technology to enhance security around the Tirumala temple. AI-powered facial recognition cameras are expected to assist not only in managing crowds but also in identifying intruders at specific locations, further strengthening safety protocols.

Over time, the temple body plans to extend facial recognition capabilities to all TTD services.

Other Decisions by TTD Board

The TTD board, in its meeting held at Annamaiah Bhavan, made several additional resolutions. These include:

  • Increasing the green cover on Tirumala Hills
  • Implementing a comprehensive temple development master plan
  • Renaming guest houses in Tirumala
  • Licensing canteens
  • Developing the Akash Ganga and Papavinasam areas
  • Supporting the SVIMS superspeciality hospital
  • Establishing a transfer and retirement policy for non-Hindu employees

The integration of cutting-edge technology reflects TTD’s commitment to combining spiritual tradition with modern advancements, ensuring that the millions of devotees visiting Tirumala each year have a safe, efficient, and meaningful experience.
