West Tripura police arrested three suspected drug peddlers and seized contraband items worth over ₹5.5 crore during an anti-drug operation in the Mahiskhala Chandinnamura area, officials said on Friday.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Mohammad Babul Miah (45), Sipan Hussain (26), and Sanjay Miah (42). The arrests were made on Thursday night from Babul Miah’s house in Mahiskhala by a team led by Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Deba Prasad Roy.

Tripura’s Drug Trafficking Concerns

Tripura, which shares an 856 km international border with Bangladesh, remains a hotspot for various cross-border crimes, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms smuggling, and cattle smuggling. While most of the border is secured with a barbed wire fence, certain patches remain unfenced due to local disputes, making them vulnerable to illegal activities.

Authorities have been intensifying their crackdown on drug networks in the region, with multiple seizures and arrests in recent months. The latest operation underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb narcotics smuggling in Tripura.

Further Investigation Underway

Police officials stated that they are conducting further investigations to trace the larger network involved in smuggling the seized contraband. They suspect links to cross-border drug trafficking operations and are working to identify other individuals connected to the case.
