Trinamool Congress Demands Action Against BJP MLA for "Malicious Remarks" on Diplomatic Meeting

The Trinamool Congress has taken a stand against West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA, Suvendu Adhikari, for what they describe as “malicious remarks” on a meeting between Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Dubai Airport. In a letter addressed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the Trinamool Congress has demanded action against Adhikari for his comments, which they believe undermine India’s foreign relations.

The Trinamool Congress accuses Suvendu Adhikari of attempting to damage relations between West Bengal and Sri Lanka with his “inappropriate comments.” They assert that his remarks are “a brazen attempt to damage India’s foreign relations” and have condemned his behavior.

In a statement posted on social media, the Trinamool Congress said, “We condemn LoP @SuvenduWB’s irresponsible and derogatory remarks on the Sri Lankan economy and his deliberate attempt to strain foreign ties.”

Furthermore, the party revealed that Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Party Leader, Derek O’Brien, has penned a letter to Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, urging immediate action against Suvendu Adhikari. The party asserts that Adhikari’s actions have the potential to impact not only diplomatic relations between West Bengal and Sri Lanka but also affect the broader diplomatic relations of the nation.

Suvendu Adhikari’s comments, made on social media platform X, criticized the state of the Sri Lankan economy and the conversation between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the visiting Sri Lankan President. Adhikari’s post on X read, “I am guessing what conversation might have taken place between the two.” It then proceeded to depict a fictional exchange between Mamata Banerjee and President Ranil Wickremesinghe, insinuating a lack of substance in their discussions.

The meeting between Mamata Banerjee and President Wickremesinghe occurred during Ms. Banerjee’s transit at Dubai Airport while en route to Spain. The encounter was reportedly impromptu.

The dispute highlights the tension between political parties and their leaders and underscores the importance of diplomatic decorum in international relations, especially at a time when the nation’s foreign relations are of paramount concern.
