Following a tragic collision between a goods train and the Kanchanjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal, train services have been fully restored at the accident site. The collision claimed the lives of 10 individuals.
The Divisional Railway Manager of Katihar, S Kumar, confirmed that electrical traction has been restored at the accident site. As a result, trains with electric locomotives have resumed operations on the affected stretch starting from Tuesday afternoon.
The restoration efforts involved repairing tracks and other essential components that suffered extensive damage during the collision. Initially, operations on both the up and down lines were affected, but now trains are moving through the accident spot with speed restrictions in place.
On Monday night, operations on the down line using both electric and diesel locomotives were restored. Subsequently, on Tuesday morning, train services on the up line, powered by diesel locomotives, were also restarted.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the accident site on Monday evening and emphasized the importance of restoring services promptly, considering the affected route’s significance in connecting the northeast region with the rest of the country.
