In a heart-wrenching incident in Agra, an eight-year-old girl tragically lost her life two weeks after being bitten by a stray dog. The young victim’s mother reportedly opted for home remedies instead of seeking immediate medical intervention, including the essential anti-rabies vaccine. The girl’s untimely demise occurred while she was being rushed to the hospital.
According to Dr. Jitendra Verma, the head of the community health centre (CHC) in Bah block, the family had initially sought treatment at the centre but was subsequently referred to SN Medical College for further medical attention. Regrettably, they chose not to follow the doctor’s advice, leading to the devastating outcome.
The incident unfolded when the girl was bitten by a stray dog approximately 10 to 15 days prior. It was her mother who was informed about the dog bite, and she attempted to treat the wound using home remedies.
The victim resided in Chausangi village, situated in Bah block, and her father worked as a laborer while her mother was a housewife.
Dr. Verma emphasized that the administration of anti-rabies vaccines is time-sensitive, with the first dose ideally administered within 24 hours of the incident. Subsequent doses are recommended on the third, seventh, and 28th days, to ensure the patient’s safety. He further explained that the symptoms of dog bites may include hydrophobia (a fear of water), neck pain, and vomiting.
This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of timely medical attention following a dog bite to prevent the onset of potentially life-threatening complications, particularly rabies.
The news also comes on the heels of a separate and equally tragic incident, where industrialist Parag Desai lost his life after sustaining a head injury due to an attack by stray dogs. The unfortunate event occurred as he was taking a stroll near his house in Gujarat, resulting in a severe head injury when he attempted to fend off the stray dogs. Despite medical intervention, Mr. Desai passed away a week later at the hospital, underscoring the need for public awareness regarding stray dog-related risks and the necessity of taking immediate preventive measures.
These incidents emphasize the importance of public awareness and timely medical treatment in cases involving stray dog-related injuries to prevent further tragedies.
