Diplomatic Row Alters Tourist Demographics: India Slides to 5th, China Rises to 3rd in Maldives' Top Tourism Markets

The serene shores of the Maldives, known for their pristine beaches and luxury tourism, are witnessing a significant shift in tourist demographics as India drops from the third to the fifth position in the top 10 markets, according to data from the Maldives’ tourism ministry. This transformation unfolds against the backdrop of escalating diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives, sparked by controversy surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Indian archipelago.

Indian tourists have traditionally been a vital demographic for the Maldives, representing nearly 11% of its tourism market in 2023. However, the aftermath of Modi’s beach excursion to Lakshadweep on January 2 has led to a noticeable decline in Indian tourist numbers, impacting the Maldives’ tourism landscape.

The controversy surrounding Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep and his subsequent social media posts has been perceived by some in the Maldives as an attempt to divert tourists away from their nation. Three junior ministers in the Mohamed Muizzu government posted derogatory comments against the Indian Prime Minister, triggering anti-Maldives sentiments on social media platforms in India.

The hashtag #BoycottMaldives gained traction on social media, accompanied by reports of cancelled trips to the island nation. In a show of solidarity, Indian travel portal EaseMyTrip suspended bookings for flights to the Maldives. The Maldives officials involved in the controversy later deleted their posts and were suspended by the country’s president for their disparaging remarks against India. Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer denounced the officials’ comments as “unacceptable” and affirmed the nation’s commitment to fostering a positive and constructive dialogue with its partners.

The impact on India’s contribution to Maldives’ tourism was swift. According to the Maldives tourism website, India commenced 2024 as the third-largest contributor, boasting a 7.1% market share. However, by January 28, this share had dipped to 8%, allowing China and the UK to surpass India and claim the 3rd and 4th positions in the top 10 list.

Observers emphasize the economic ramifications of strained diplomatic ties, with Ahmed Shaheed stating, “The government of Maldives can’t afford to have a spat with India, and it will be an economic suicide. Everybody should see this.”

As the Maldives navigates the shifting dynamics in its tourism landscape, efforts are underway to rebuild diplomatic bridges and restore the traditional influx of Indian tourists who have long been a cherished part of the archipelago’s vibrant tourism industry.
