Three people were killed, and one sustained serious injuries when a massive rock fell onto a moving car near Lengpui Airport in Mizoram on Monday afternoon. The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the Pukpui area, located near the airport, while the vehicle was en route to Aizawl.
According to police reports, the car was struck by falling debris, crushing it on the spot. The victims, including two women, were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth occupant, the driver, was critically injured and has been rushed to Aizawl for treatment. Police officials confirmed that the victims’ identities have not yet been established.
“We have recovered three bodies from the wreckage, and the injured driver was taken to the hospital. The area has a history of rockfall incidents, and this is unfortunately another case of such a tragedy,” a police officer from the Sairang police station stated.
The Pukpui area, located along the route from Lengpui Airport to Aizawl, is notorious for frequent rockfalls. The region witnesses several such incidents every year, many of which cause disruption on National Highway-44A, which connects the airport to the state capital. Local authorities have often struggled to manage these recurring dangers.
The tragic event has once again highlighted the ongoing risk of rockfalls in the area, raising concerns about road safety. Authorities have urged for improved measures to prevent such accidents, including better monitoring and reinforcement of the roads.
An investigation into the incident is underway, and further details will be provided once the victims’ identities are confirmed.
