In a tragic incident in Jam Khambhalia town, Gujarat, an elderly woman and her two granddaughters lost their lives when a dilapidated three-storey building collapsed amid heavy rainfall. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening in the Gagwani Fali locality of Devbhumi Dwarka district, led to a prolonged rescue operation that lasted nearly six hours.
The victims, identified as Kesharben Kanjaria (65), Pritiben Kanjaria (15), and Payalben Kanjaria (18), were found after extensive efforts by rescue teams. The collapse, caused by the ongoing heavy rains, led to debris trapping the three, while five others were rescued from the wreckage by local residents.
The rescue operation involved teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and the fire department, who worked through the night to recover the bodies and rescue those trapped. The deceased were transported to a government hospital for post-mortem examinations.
The heavy rainfall that led to the building collapse has been affecting Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, with several districts experiencing severe weather conditions. Areas including Umarpada in Surat received 276 mm of rain within 24 hours, causing significant flooding and damage. Other affected districts include Navsari, Junagadh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Kutch, Dangs, and Tapi, where local authorities have issued advisories to avoid unnecessary travel and avoid crossing overflowing causeways.
In response to the severe weather, the Navsari collector has announced the closure of educational institutions for the day to ensure the safety of students and staff.
