“Three Charged by Canadian Authorities in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case”

Latest news"Three Charged by Canadian Authorities in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case"

Canadian authorities have formally charged three individuals in connection with the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent pro-Khalistan figure, on June 18, 2023, in Surrey, British Columbia. The suspects, identified as Karan Brar (22), Kamalpreet Singh (22), and Karanpreet Singh (28), were arrested in and around Edmonton, the capital of British Columbia.

According to a statement from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) released on Friday, the three individuals have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. However, investigations are ongoing to identify additional suspects and establish any potential Indian link to the crime.

Commander David Teboul, Assistant Commissioner of the Federal Policing Program in the Pacific Region, emphasized during a press conference in Surrey that the investigation is still active and not limited to the arrested individuals. He mentioned ongoing efforts to investigate connections to the Government of India but did not delve into specifics regarding evidence or motives, noting that such details would surface during the judicial proceedings set to commence after the suspects are brought to Surrey.

Teboul acknowledged the challenging nature of the relationship between Canadian and Indian agencies in recent years but confirmed ongoing coordination and collaboration in this case.

The suspects were apprehended with the assistance of the Surrey detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Edmonton Police Service. Superintendent Mandeep Mooker, Officer in Charge of IHIT, stressed that the investigation continues as authorities aim to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the homicide.

Reports indicate that the accused individuals entered Canada as international students within the past five years and are allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, according to anonymous law enforcement sources cited by Canadian media.

Images of the arrested individuals and the Toyota Corolla, believed to have been used by the suspects leading up to the crime, were released by the police. Nijjar’s murder had previously strained relations between India and Canada, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioning in September 2023 the possibility of an Indian link to the murder, a statement that was met with criticism from Indian officials.

The killing of Nijjar, known for his involvement in the Khalistan Referendum organized by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), continues to draw attention and scrutiny, with SFJ’s general counsel Gurpatwant Pannun stating that while the arrests mark progress, they only scratch the surface. Pannun accused New Delhi and its representatives in Canada of providing support leading up to the killing, a claim India has dismissed as “absurd” and “motivated,” reiterating its willingness to cooperate with Canada given specific and relevant information.
