Tesla Model Y Debuts in India: Specs, Price, and What to Expect

BrandspotTesla Model Y Debuts in India: Specs, Price, and What to Expect

Tesla Inc., the global trailblazer in electric vehicles, has officially stepped into the Indian automobile market. Making its grand debut with the Model Y SUV, Tesla has launched its first retail showroom in Mumbai, situated in the prestigious Maker Maxity Mall at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The company has also developed a service centre and warehouse facility close to the outlet to support early adopters.

Two Model Y Options: Designed for Indian Roads

Tesla is introducing the Model Y in two different trims for Indian consumers:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive (Standard) – ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
  • Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive – ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom)

Both models are currently being imported directly from Tesla’s Shanghai plant, delivering international standards in design and engineering.

Driving Range and Performance: Blending Power with Efficiency

Tesla’s Model Y is known for its strong electric performance, and the Indian version delivers just that:

  • Top Speed: 201 km/h
  • Range on a Full Charge:
    • RWD: Up to 500 km
    • Long-Range RWD: Up to 622 km
  • Acceleration (0–100 kmph):
    • RWD: 5.9 seconds
    • Long-Range RWD: 5.6 seconds

Whether for city commutes or long-distance travel, the Model Y is designed to perform efficiently while keeping emissions at zero.

Why the High Price Tag in India?

Compared to its price in the United States (approx. ₹32.18 lakh), the Indian Model Y costs significantly more. This steep pricing is primarily due to a 70% import duty levied on fully built units. Tesla’s future plans may include setting up local assembly or manufacturing, which could drastically reduce the pricing structure.

Customization Options: Colours and Interior Themes

Tesla offers six exterior colour options, though only one is included at no extra charge:

  • Included: Stealth Grey
  • Additional Paid Colours:
    • Pearl White Multi-Coat
    • Diamond Black
    • Glacier Blue
    • Quick Silver
    • Ultra Red

Interior layout choices:

  • Standard: All-Black Interior
  • Optional: Black & White Interior (₹95,000 extra)

These customizable options allow buyers to personalize their Model Y based on preferences.

Interior Features: Technology-First Design

The Model Y’s cabin combines Tesla’s futuristic aesthetic with comfort-oriented features:

  • Front Display: 15.4-inch touchscreen
  • Rear Display: 8-inch second-row screen
  • Seats: Heated, ventilated, and power-reclining front seats; heated foldable second-row seats
  • Trunk: Hands-free auto-lift tailgate and a front luggage compartment (“frunk”)
  • Design Highlights: Ambient lighting, aluminium detailing, and minimalist finishes

Tesla stays true to its minimal, tech-integrated style while ensuring practicality and comfort.

Self-Driving: Planned but Not Yet Available

As of now, Tesla’s signature Autopilot or Full Self-Driving technology isn’t available in India. However, buyers will be able to activate the feature once it becomes available in the market at an extra cost of ₹6 lakh.

Finance and EMI Details for Buyers

Tesla is also offering financing options to attract customers:

  • Standard RWD:
    • EMI: ₹1,14,098/month
    • Downpayment: ₹6,20,314
  • Long-Range RWD:
    • EMI: ₹1,29,193/month
    • Downpayment: ₹7,01,115

These plans are geared towards premium buyers looking to switch to electric mobility without paying the full amount upfront.

What Tesla’s Entry Means for India’s EV Landscape

Tesla’s arrival with the Model Y marks a new era for India’s electric vehicle market. While its current offering targets the high-end segment, the brand’s expansion into local manufacturing or assembly could bring down prices and make premium EVs more accessible. The Model Y, with its blend of performance, technology, and status, is likely to inspire a shift in consumer expectations in the years ahead.
