Tensions ran high in Bahraich following the violent death of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra during a Durga idol immersion procession. The situation spiraled into chaos as protests erupted, resulting in shops being set ablaze and internet services suspended in the district.
The unrest began after Mishra was shot during the procession in Maharajganj near Rehua Mansoor village on Sunday. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His funeral, held under heavy police security, attracted a large crowd carrying sticks, demanding justice and accountability for his death.
Protests and Violence
As the funeral procession moved through the streets, anger surged, leading to stone-pelting and clashes with police. Several individuals were reported injured during the unrest. The situation deteriorated further as protesters blocked the road in front of Mahsi tehsil, refusing to cremate Mishra’s body until their demands were met. They called for a police encounter for those responsible, house demolitions, and financial compensation for the victim’s family.
In response to the escalating violence, the Uttar Pradesh government dispatched high-ranking officials, including Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash, to restore order.
Government and Political Responses
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya addressed the situation on social media, asserting that attempts to disturb peace would not be tolerated and urging vigilance against those supporting the rioters. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav condemned the violence, criticizing the government for its lack of preparedness during the procession and urging the administration to take the necessary precautions.
Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her concern, labeling the violence and the administration’s inaction as “extremely sad and unfortunate.”
Underlying Issues
The violence reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over loud music being played during the Durga idol immersion, which sparked tensions in the area. Bahraich District Magistrate Monika Rani confirmed that idol immersion was halted in several locations due to the unrest.
As police implemented tear gas and batons to disperse the crowds, authorities have initiated investigations, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and ongoing raids to apprehend one of the main suspects, Salman.
The current situation in Bahraich remains tense, with law enforcement on high alert to prevent further escalation. The government aims to restore normalcy and ensure justice for the victims of the recent violence.
