Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has directed officials to deploy robots in the rescue operation at the collapsed SLBC tunnel, where eight individuals have been trapped since February 22. The move comes as fragments of the damaged Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) inside the tunnel pose risks to rescue personnel.
During his visit to the site on Saturday, Reddy reviewed the ongoing efforts with officials from various agencies and announced that ₹4 crores would be allocated for utilizing robot technology in the rescue mission. He emphasized the dangers caused by submerged TBM debris, including water, soil, and stones, which have complicated operations.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier suggested deploying robots inside the tunnel to minimize risks to rescue workers. Declaring the collapse a “national disaster,” the irrigation minister affirmed the government’s commitment to the operation despite challenges such as low oxygen levels, heavy water seepage, and the presence of submerged TBM parts.
Use of Advanced Technology in Rescue
Rescue teams have been working to cut through damaged TBM components to reach the stranded workers. The minister instructed officials to use the best available technology worldwide to locate and save them.
Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar, overseeing the operation, briefed Reddy on its progress. Officials also discussed obstacles slowing down the rescue and measures to overcome them with experts from the National Geophysical Research Institute, robotic specialists, and rat miners.
Cadaver Dogs Assist in Search Efforts
On Friday, specially trained cadaver dogs from the Kerala Police identified two potential locations of human presence inside the tunnel. These dogs, capable of detecting scents from a depth of 15 feet, aided the rescue teams in identifying areas to remove silt and debris.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
Despite challenging conditions, rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, and Navy, continue to work relentlessly. The minister assured that the government would fully support the officials and workers engaged in the mission.
