In response to recent cases of suspected food poisoning, the Telangana government has imposed a one-year ban on the production, storage, and sale of mayonnaise made with raw eggs. The state’s food safety commissioner issued the order immediately following public complaints that linked the product to foodborne illnesses.
“Observations during enforcement and complaints from the public suggest that raw-egg mayonnaise may have contributed to multiple food poisoning incidents over recent months,” stated the order from the food safety office.
The crackdown on raw-egg mayonnaise comes as Telangana grapples with an alarming case of suspected food poisoning in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills neighborhood. On October 25, Reshma Begum, 31, and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, fell critically ill after consuming momos from a street vendor in Chintal Basti, Khairatabad. Within hours, they experienced symptoms of severe food poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhea, and intense abdominal pain. Although initially opting for rest to alleviate symptoms, Begum and her daughters were later hospitalized as their conditions worsened. Tragically, Begum passed away en route to the hospital, while her daughters are still receiving medical care.
Local authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s food safety department, in collaboration with the Banjara Hills police, located and questioned the street vendor responsible for serving the momos. Initial inspections of the vendor’s stall revealed multiple food safety violations, including lack of an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) license and unsanitary cooking conditions.
In addition to Begum’s family, authorities confirmed that at least 20 other individuals from the neighborhood were hospitalized with similar symptoms after consuming food from the same vendor. Food safety officials underscored the importance of FSSAI licensing to ensure basic hygiene standards, noting that the stall failed to meet any such regulatory requirements.
