"Tamil Nadu on Alert: Cyclonic Conditions Expected, Heavy Rain Hits Chennai with Orange Alert"

Tamil Nadu is on high alert as several districts, notably Chennai, gear up for moderate to heavy rainfall following persistent downpours and an orange alert issued by the Meteorological Center for December 2-3. The ongoing heavy rainfall, attributed to a well-marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, has created chaos in Chennai and surrounding areas, causing waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and the shutdown of educational institutions.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Chennai, regions including Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Nagapattinam, and Ramanathapuram are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and lightning on Friday morning. The incessant rain, an aftermath of the low-pressure system, is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by December 3 and make landfall in north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by December 4, as forecasted by the weather department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and adjacent districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, causing concerns about potential flooding and water-related hazards. Thursday saw moderate rainfall in certain areas of Chennai, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam stations reporting 15.8mm and 14mm of rainfall, respectively. Nagapattinam district recorded the highest rainfall at 26mm in Tamil Nadu.

The downpour’s impact has led to school closures and waterlogging in numerous areas, prompting authorities to issue flood alerts, especially for low-lying regions and villages along the Adyar River banks, following Chembarambakkam Lake’s water release. Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected the Command Control Centre at Ripon Buildings, overseeing measures to tackle the rainfall situation. Assuring swift action, the Chief Minister personally addressed concerns from residents via the 1913 helpline, emphasizing inter-departmental coordination to address grievances promptly.
