Veteran farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal ended his 131-day-long hunger strike on Sunday, marking a significant moment in the ongoing farmers’ agitation for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP). The announcement came a day after Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union minister of state for railways Ravneet Singh Bittu personally appealed to him to end his fast.

The Centre has scheduled a crucial meeting with the protesting farmers of Punjab on February 14 in Chandigarh, as the ongoing standoff between the farmers and the government continues. This announcement comes after a meeting between Union Agriculture Ministry officials and farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for over two months.

The Supreme Court on Saturday issued a directive to the Punjab government, setting a December 31 deadline to persuade farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to end his indefinite hunger strike and seek medical attention. Dallewal has been fasting at the Khanauri border since November 26, demanding a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) for crops and other farmer-related issues.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the immediate hospitalisation of 70-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike since November 26 at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana. Concerned about his deteriorating health, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized that any misfortune would hold the "entire state machinery" accountable.
