The Supreme Court has raised questions regarding the West Bengal government’s involvement as a petitioner in the Sandeshkhali case, particularly in advocating for private individuals’ interests. This development comes amid the state government’s challenge to the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI investigation into alleged crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
During the hearing of the state government’s plea against the High Court’s order, the Supreme Court expressed skepticism about the state acting as a petitioner to protect the interests of private individuals. The bench of Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta questioned the necessity for the state’s involvement in this manner.
The counsel representing the West Bengal government argued that they were aggrieved by certain comments made in the High Court’s order, particularly regarding the state government’s actions in the matter. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the state, requested a couple of weeks’ time to present crucial information before the court.
The Calcutta High Court had directed a CBI investigation into the allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, leading to the state government’s challenge in the Supreme Court. The government’s plea highlighted concerns about the demoralization of the state machinery, including the police force, due to the High Court’s order.
The state’s plea emphasized the need for clear guidelines and limitations on the CBI’s authority in the Sandeshkhali area, especially regarding matters not directly related to the allegations raised in the PIL petition. The ongoing CBI investigation, including cases related to attacks on Enforcement Directorate officials, is being monitored by the court.
The High Court’s directives for a comprehensive investigation by the CBI into various aspects of the Sandeshkhali case, including illegal land conversions and crimes against women, remain a focal point in the legal proceedings. The matter is scheduled for further hearing in July, allowing time for the submission of essential information by the state government.
As the legal battle unfolds, the Supreme Court’s scrutiny of the West Bengal government’s role in the Sandeshkhali case and the implications of the CBI investigation order will continue to shape the course of justice and governance in the region.
