Supreme Court Launches WhatsApp Updates for Advocates on Case Information

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, has introduced a new initiative to provide advocates with updates on case information through WhatsApp messages. This move aims to enhance transparency and accessibility to justice within the judicial system.

CJI Chandrachud announced this development, stating that advocates will now receive automated messages regarding case filings and immediate updates on cause lists as soon as they are published. Cause lists detail the cases scheduled for hearing on a specific day, streamlining the information flow for legal professionals.

“In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court of India launched a small initiative. It has the potential to have a big-bang impact,” remarked CJI Chandrachud, acknowledging the significance of integrating WhatsApp messaging services with the court’s IT infrastructure. This initiative aligns with broader efforts towards digitization and modernization in the legal sector.

During a hearing before a nine-judge bench, Justice Chandrachud highlighted the environmental benefits of this digital transition, noting that it will reduce paper usage and contribute to sustainability efforts.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta commended the Supreme Court’s move as “another revolutionary step,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to digitizing judicial operations for improved accessibility and efficiency.

The official WhatsApp number of the Supreme Court was provided by CJI Chandrachud, with a clear directive that it will not accept messages or calls. This integration of WhatsApp messaging is part of the Supreme Court’s ongoing efforts under the e-court project, which has received substantial funding from the government to modernize and streamline judicial processes.

The move towards digital platforms like WhatsApp reflects a broader trend in leveraging technology to facilitate smoother communication, enhance transparency, and optimize workflow within the legal landscape.
