Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, along with his wife Dona Ganguly and their daughter Sana Ganguly, participated in a candlelight protest in Kolkata, demanding justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident, which has shocked the nation, has brought renewed focus on the pervasive issue of violence against women in India.
The Ganguly family’s participation in the protest underscores the growing public outrage over the case. Sana Ganguly voiced her strong sentiments during the march, stating, “We want justice, whatever it takes to get it… This has to stop. Every day we hear about some rape case and we feel bad that this is happening even in 2024.”
The rape and murder case has ignited widespread protests from medical professionals and citizens, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced protections and stricter laws against violence targeting medical staff. In response to the public outcry, the Supreme Court has intervened, setting up a national task force of doctors to recommend measures for ensuring the safety of healthcare workers. Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud emphasized the importance of protecting doctors and women, stating, “Protecting safety of doctors and women doctors is a matter of national interest and principle of equality. The nation cannot await another rape for it to take some steps.”
The Supreme Court has also demanded a report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the ongoing probe into the crime. While a civic volunteer has been arrested, the victim’s family alleges that multiple perpetrators were involved and is calling for a comprehensive investigation.
The protests have also seen doctors across India engaging in various forms of demonstrations, including candlelight marches and work stoppages, in a bid to push for safer working conditions and stricter legal measures.
