Ekadashi 2025: Date and Timings at a Glance

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, an important religious observance in the Hindu calendar, will be marked on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Devotees across India will fast and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu for family welfare and the blessing of children.

Vrat Schedule:

  • Start of Ekadashi Tithi: August 4 at 11:41 AM
  • End of Ekadashi Tithi: August 5 at 1:12 PM
  • Parana (Breaking Fast): August 6, between 5:45 AM and 8:26 AM

What Makes This Ekadashi Special?

Unlike most Ekadashis that focus on salvation (moksha), this one is family-focused. The word Putrada literally means “giver of sons” or “one who grants progeny.” This makes the Shravana version of Putrada Ekadashi especially important for married couples hoping to expand their family.

It is also observed for:

  • Praying for children’s long life and health
  • Removing sins and obstacles from previous births
  • Strengthening family ties and prosperity

Rituals That Define the Day

On this spiritually potent day, devotees follow specific rituals with full sincerity:

Step 1: Cleanliness and Preparation

A sacred bath early in the morning, preferably before sunrise, marks the beginning of the vrat.

🕯 Step 2: The Fast

Many devotees observe a nirjala vrat (no food or water), while others choose a phalahar vrat (only fruits, milk, or light food).

🕊

Step 3: Vishnu Puja

Worship includes offering Tulsi leaves, lighting a ghee lamp, and chanting mantras such as the Vishnu Sahasranama. Many devotees also read from the Bhagavad Gita.

Step 4: Charity

Feeding the poor, donating food or clothes, and helping cows or Brahmins are highly encouraged.

The Story of Mahijit: Root of the Tradition

According to ancient texts, King Mahijit, who ruled the kingdom of Mahishmati, remained childless. Upon consulting Sage Lomesh, he and his queen performed this Ekadashi vrat with complete devotion. Their prayers were answered, and they were blessed with a healthy son.

This powerful tale of faith and reward has been passed down through generations.

Relevance Beyond Tradition

While Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is rooted in tradition, its deeper values are timeless. It promotes:

  • Gratitude and patience in life’s journey
  • Focus on family, values, and spiritual wellness
  • Inner discipline through fasting and prayer

This sacred observance gives people a moment to pause, reflect, and realign with the divine and with their families
