Overnight heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in Shimla, causing significant damage and disrupting normal life. The Churat Nullah and Chamyana rivulet near Shimla were particularly affected, leading to the flooding of roads and damaging vehicles.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the hill state, forecasting continued heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms until July 1. Shimla recorded 84.3mm of rainfall, while Jubbarhatti airport received 136mm overnight.
The torrential rain, which began around 10 PM on Thursday and continued into the early hours of Friday, resulted in flash floods that damaged seven vehicles in the area. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, but the water supply to Shimla town was severely impacted due to the flooding.
In the Malyana area of Shimla, roads were blocked by debris from the hillsides, leaving three parked cars stuck in the mud. Vehicle owners, discovering the damage in the morning, worked alongside laborers to clear the roads and retrieve their vehicles.
Meanwhile, on the route from Manali to Rohtang Pass, a Maruti Gypsy skidded off the road amidst the inclement weather, injuring seven people, including tourists. One of the injured individuals is reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities are urging residents and travelers in Shimla and surrounding districts, including Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Chamba, Sirmaur, and Solan, to exercise caution as heavy rains are expected to continue through the weekend.
