A worker at a dog shelter in Noida’s Sector 108 was attacked by a pitbull, leaving him with severe leg injuries and requiring hospitalisation. The incident, caught on camera, has once again raised concerns over the safety of aggressive dog breeds.
Pitbull Attack Caught on Camera
A viral video of the incident shows the pitbull repeatedly biting the worker’s right leg as he lay on the ground bleeding. Other workers at the shelter rushed to intervene and managed to rescue him. He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Pitbulls are known for their aggressive nature and have been involved in multiple attacks on people, including their owners. The incident in Noida adds to a growing list of such cases in India, sparking fresh concerns over the presence of these breeds in residential areas.
Government’s Crackdown on Aggressive Dog Breeds
In light of similar attacks, authorities have taken steps to regulate the ownership of dangerous dog breeds. Last month, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced an amendment to the Goa Animal Breeding, Domestic Regulations, and Compensation Ordinance 2024 to ban the import, sale, and breeding of pit bulls and rottweilers.
“We have approved an amendment to ban pitbulls and rottweilers. Those who already own these breeds must take responsibility for them,” Sawant stated after a cabinet meeting.
The move follows the Centre’s 2023 decision to impose a nationwide ban on the import, sale, and breeding of 23 “ferocious” dog breeds, including Pitbull Terriers, Rottweilers, American Bulldogs, Dogo Argentinos, and Cane Corsos. The government cited concerns over human safety and ordered strict enforcement of the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules 2017 and the Pet Shop Rules 2018.
Another Fatal Dog Attack in Ludhiana
The Noida pitbull attack comes amid reports of another tragic incident in Punjab’s Ludhiana, where a 13-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs.
Harsukhpreet Singh, a Class 5 student, was attacked while playing outside his house in Hasanpur village. His parents tried to save him, but the stray dogs—believed to feed at a nearby carcass dumping ground—only backed off when more villagers intervened. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
This was the second fatal dog attack in the village in the same week, following the death of 10-year-old Arjun Kumar on January 5.
Growing Concerns Over Dog Attacks
The recent cases highlight the dangers posed by aggressive dog breeds and stray dogs in India. While authorities have introduced regulations to curb the ownership of ferocious breeds, enforcement and public awareness remain crucial to preventing such incidents in the future.
