An encounter is currently underway between security forces and a group of terrorists in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation began early Tuesday morning, following specific intelligence about terrorist movement in the region.
According to DIG Rayees Mohammad Bhat, the encounter commenced after a Search and Destroy Operation (SADO) was launched based on credible input. “Contact has been established with a group of terrorists in Khaned area of PS Basantgarh. Ops underway,” Bhat reported in a post on X.
Udhampur, part of the mountainous Jammu division, has been a focal point for anti-terror operations due to the presence of foreign terrorists hiding in the dense forests. The army has deployed over 4,000 soldiers, including elite Para commandos and troops trained in mountain warfare, to combat terrorism in this region and neighboring districts such as Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, and Reasi.
In response to the escalating threats, high-level security meetings chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have reassessed anti-terrorism strategies. The security forces are focusing on eradicating terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), sympathizers, and those aiding them.
As part of these efforts, the police have detained around 40 individuals suspected of harboring, assisting, or guiding terrorists. Two detainees have confessed to participating in ambush attacks in the Doda area alongside the terrorists. The ongoing operations aim to neutralize the threat and restore security in the affected districts.
