The security cover for India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has been significantly upgraded from ‘Y’ to ‘Z’ category, according to official sources. The decision, made by the Union Home Ministry, will result in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) taking over the responsibility for his security, a role previously managed by the Delhi Police.
S Jaishankar, 68, had previously been safeguarded by an armed team from the Delhi Police under the ‘Y’ category security cover. With the new ‘Z’ category designation, his security detail will be bolstered to include approximately 14-15 armed commandos who will be on duty around the clock, working in shifts across the country. This elevated security status aims to ensure comprehensive protection for the External Affairs Minister.
The CRPF is known for its proficiency in providing VIP security cover. At present, it manages the security of 176-odd protectees, including prominent figures like Union Home Minister Amit Shah and key Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The ‘Z’ category security is reserved for individuals considered to be at higher risk, requiring more extensive and stringent protection measures.
The decision to enhance S Jaishankar’s security cover underscores the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of key figures in Indian politics and governance. This measure is aimed at providing the highest level of protection for the External Affairs Minister, given his vital role in shaping India’s foreign policy and international diplomacy.
