Unanticipated Rainfall and Thunderstorms Hit Delhi-NCR for Second Consecutive Day; More Showers Predicted

The national capital and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) experienced a surprising bout of rainfall accompanied by thundershowers for the second day in a row, disrupting daily life and causing road blockages due to waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted further showers throughout the day, adding to the woes of the residents grappling with harsh winter conditions.

On Thursday, the unexpected rainfall caught many by surprise, with the weather department predicting moderate-intensity rain and thundershowers over various areas of Delhi-NCR. The affected regions include Narela, Alipur, Vivek Vihar, Jafarpur, Nazafgarh, Palam, Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, Mahrauli, Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, and Greater Noida.

The downpour commenced on Wednesday morning, leading to road blockages and waterlogging in multiple areas across the national capital. The adverse weather conditions also caused delays in train and flight schedules, causing inconvenience to commuters. The IMD attributes the unexpected rainfall to the influence of two western disturbances.

According to the IMD statement released on Wednesday, “One patch is moving across Delhi and is currently giving light to moderate rainfall at a few places, accompanied by moderate to intense thunderstorms and lightning and gusty winds… Another patch is moving from Rohtak and Jhajjar (Haryana) towards Delhi, this may give another spell of light to moderate rainfall at a few places accompanied by moderate to intense thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.”

Apart from Delhi, several nearby regions are anticipated to witness similar downpours. The IMD highlighted areas including Rajaund, Safidon, Barwala, Jind, Panipat, Gohana, Gannaur, Meham, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Nuh (Haryana), Baraut, Meerut, Khekra, Modinagar, Amroha, Garhmukteshwar, Pilakhua, Hapur, Gulaoti, Siyana, Sambhal, Billari, Chandausi, Bulandshahar, Jahangirabad, Bahajoi (UP), and Bhiwari (Rajasthan).

The IMD’s bulletin also predicted light to moderate intensity rain over and adjoining areas of Moradabad, Rampur, Iglas, Raya, Hathras, and Mathura (UP) in the next two hours. As the unexpected weather persists, residents and authorities are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during these unforeseen weather conditions.
