Tensions flared in Mandi on Thursday as Hindu groups staged large-scale protests against an allegedly illegal mosque, prompting the police to deploy water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. The unrest has drawn significant attention, leading Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu to call an all-party meeting to address the situation and appeal for calm.
The controversy erupted after the mosque authorities reportedly demolished portions of the complex deemed unauthorized. Despite these actions, large crowds gathered on Jail Road, chanting slogans against the state government and demanding stricter measures against the alleged illegal construction.
In response to the escalating situation, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the need for peace and restraint. “I have appealed to everyone to maintain peace, and no provocative statements should be made. I have called an all-party meeting to discuss the matter,” Sukhu said. He reiterated the government’s commitment to respecting all religions and maintaining order. “No one is allowed to take the law into their own hands. The land of Himachal has respect for all religions,” he added.
Security measures were heightened in Mandi as the police anticipated a significant gathering. Mandi Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma confirmed that the police had been informed of the planned demonstration and had taken steps to ensure law and order. “Around 300 police personnel have been deployed, and barricades have been set up at key locations, including the entrance of Mandi town, for routine checking,” Verma stated.
The deployment of water cannons and the large police presence reflect the seriousness of the situation as authorities strive to manage the conflict and prevent further unrest. The situation remains under close monitoring as the all-party meeting aims to bring about a resolution and restore peace to the region.
