Karnataka is set to experience heavy rains in the next 24 hours, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the Uttara Kannada district until July 16. The coastal region of the state is already on high alert as authorities prepare for the impending downpour.
In response to the forecast, the state government has declared a holiday for schools in Uttara Kannada district. The administration has mandated the closure of all schools and PU colleges in the taluks of Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, and Joida on Monday.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) attributes the vigorous monsoon conditions over Karnataka to the existing offshore trough along the Maharashtra-north Kerala coast and a cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off coastal Andhra Pradesh. This weather system is channeling more moisture into Karnataka, intensifying the rainfall.
On Sunday, Uttara Kannada district already experienced significant rainfall, which is expected to continue in the coming days. Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada recorded the highest rainfall on Sunday, with 220 mm.
The Central Water Commission has issued an inflow forecast for six dams and barrages in Karnataka, indicating that inflows are equal to or exceed the specified threshold limits. With an increase in storage levels, the water levels at the Cauvery and Krishna basins are expected to rise.
