In a shocking case that has sent ripples through Punjab, Ram Saroop, also known as Sodhi, has been arrested for the murder of 11 men over an 18-month spree. His crimes, rooted in deep emotional trauma and societal rejection, have unveiled a chilling tale of anguish and violence.
Dressed as a Woman to Lure Victims
When police apprehended Sodhi, he was disguised as a woman, reportedly seeking his next victim. According to investigators, Sodhi targeted men along Punjab’s highways, focusing on individuals who insulted him or refused to pay for sexual services.
Triggering Events
Sodhi, a native of Chaura in Hoshiarpur district, revealed that he embraced his homosexual identity at 22 but faced constant ridicule and derogatory remarks about his sexuality and body. These insults triggered deep emotional distress, which he cited as the driving force behind his violent actions.
His first victim, Harpreet Singh, was killed after refusing to pay the agreed-upon amount following a sexual encounter. Similarly, his latest victim, 37-year-old Maninder Singh, mocked Sodhi’s sexuality, leading to his brutal murder. Maninder, who worked at a toll plaza, was last seen giving Sodhi a lift on his motorcycle. His body was later discovered near Kiratpur Sahib.
Evidence and Arrest
Sodhi’s crimes unraveled when police recovered a muffler belonging to him near one of the crime scenes. This crucial piece of evidence led to his arrest. Authorities have revealed that Sodhi only targeted men who rejected him or humiliated him over his identity.
Psychological Underpinnings
Sodhi’s actions stem from a complex mix of societal rejection and personal anguish. The India Today report highlighted how insults and disparaging remarks about his sexuality and appearance profoundly affected his psyche, pushing him into a cycle of violence.
Community in Shock
The arrest has left the community shaken, prompting discussions on mental health, societal acceptance, and the stigma surrounding sexuality. While the police continue their investigation, Sodhi’s case has shed light on the devastating consequences of emotional trauma and societal rejection.
As the case develops, authorities are delving deeper into Sodhi’s background and the factors contributing to his actions.
