In a disturbing incident, a resident of Punjab fell victim to terrorist violence in the heart of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Amritpal Singh, hailing from Amritsar, was fatally shot by terrorists in the Shaheed Gunj area on Wednesday evening, according to police reports. The attack also left another individual critically wounded.
The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the tragic event, stating, “Terrorists fired upon a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh resident of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar, who succumbed to the injuries. One more person is grievously injured and evacuated for medical attention. Area has been cordoned off.”
Reports suggest that the assailants, armed with AK rifles, approached Singh and fired upon him at point-blank range around 7 pm local time. Despite immediate medical attention, Singh tragically lost his life at the scene. The injured, identified as Rohit, aged 25 and also from Amritsar, sustained bullet wounds to the abdomen and is currently receiving treatment at SMHS hospital in Srinagar.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various political quarters. The National Conference (JKNC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both expressed shock and disgust at the barbaric attack. JKNC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, denouncing violence and emphasizing the importance of peace in society.
The PDP also condemned the “dastardly attack” and extended prayers for the swift recovery of the injured person.
This tragic event marks the first attack on a non-local individual in Kashmir this year. However, it comes as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorist activities in the region. Last year witnessed several similar attacks on non-local workers in various districts of the valley, including Anantnag and Shopian.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in the region and serves as a grim reminder of the need for concerted efforts to ensure the safety and security of all residents, irrespective of their place of origin. Authorities have cordoned off the area as investigations into the attack continue.
As the nation mourns the loss of Amritpal Singh and prays for the speedy recovery of Rohit, questions surrounding the motives behind the attack and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future remain at the forefront of public discourse.
