The Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has firmly rejected media reports suggesting that Sunil Jakhar has resigned from his position as the state unit chief. The party asserted that Jakhar, who is 70 years old, continues to lead the party in Punjab.
Amidst swirling rumors, Jakhar himself has not responded to calls, prompting his aide, Sanjeev Trikha, to clarify that “there is nothing like this.” Anil Sarin, the general secretary of the Punjab BJP, labeled the resignation claims as “totally baseless and false,” reinforcing that Jakhar remains at the helm of the party’s state unit.
The speculation gained traction following a media report claiming that Jakhar had stepped down. Additionally, Jakhar’s absence from a recent meeting focused on the party’s membership drive led to further conjecture regarding his leadership. However, Sarin emphasized that it is not necessary for the state unit chief to be present at every meeting.
The situation has drawn comments from the opposition, with Punjab Congress chief and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring taking to X to express, “Mr @sunilkjakhar, All the best, where next?”
Jakhar, who was appointed as Punjab BJP chief in July 2023, succeeded Ashwani Sharma. He joined the BJP in May 2022, shortly after Congress faced a significant defeat in the Punjab assembly elections. A seasoned politician, Jakhar previously served as MLA three times from the Abohar assembly constituency and as a Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur. He was also the Punjab Congress chief and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2012 to 2016.
