Kolkata, West Bengal: The much-anticipated India’s first underwater metro service commenced its public operations today, marking a historic moment in the city’s transportation infrastructure. Commuters queued up eagerly for the inaugural ride on the country’s maiden underwater train, which traverses beneath the Hooghly River.
Amid cheers and patriotic slogans like ‘Vande Bharat’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai,’ passengers embarked on this engineering marvel, expressing pride and excitement about this innovative addition to Kolkata’s metropolitan transit system.
The underwater metro line spans the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, covering a distance of 520 meters beneath the Hooghly River. Decorated with blue LED lights, the tunnel offers a mesmerizing experience as it marks the lower part of the river.
Metro Railway Kolkata shared the joyous occasion on social media, showcasing the first commercial metro service entering the newly inaugurated Majerhat station of the Purple Line.
“I am so excited to travel in India’s first underwater metro train. It hardly took 10 minutes to get the tickets,” exclaimed a thrilled passenger, reflecting the enthusiasm among the public.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro operations in Kolkata on March 6, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and infrastructure. During the inaugural event, PM Modi interacted with school students and metro staff while taking a ride, symbolizing the connectivity and progress brought about by such initiatives.
In addition to the underwater metro, PM Modi also inaugurated other crucial metro sections and connectivity projects across the country, emphasizing the government’s comprehensive approach towards modernizing public transportation and improving connectivity for citizens.
The Majerhat Metro Station, part of the Joka-Esplanade line, stands out as an architectural marvel, showcasing innovative designs to optimize urban mobility. With the underwater metro scheduled to operate every 12 to 15 minutes on weekdays, Kolkata’s commuters can now experience a seamless and efficient transit experience.
The launch of India’s first underwater metro service marks a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure development, setting a benchmark for sustainable and modern transportation solutions in the country.
