President Droupadi Murmu has publicly condemned the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, calling for decisive action against violence towards women. Her remarks come as the nation continues to grapple with widespread protests and calls for justice following the discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s body on August 9.
In her first public statement on the case, President Murmu expressed deep anguish and horror, emphasizing that “enough is enough” and urging society to confront the persistent issue of violence against women. Speaking to PTI, she underscored the urgency of addressing this chronic problem, which has sparked nationwide outrage and demonstrations.
Condemnation of Continued Violence
President Murmu highlighted the ongoing threat posed by criminals even as the country rallies in support of justice for the victim. “Even as students, doctors, and citizens were protesting in Kolkata, criminals remained on the prowl elsewhere,” she said. She condemned the “deplorable mindset” that views women as lesser beings and criticized the “collective amnesia” that has plagued society since the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
“This collective amnesia is obnoxious,” President Murmu stated, stressing the need for an honest and unbiased self-introspection within society to address the root causes of such heinous acts. She called for a comprehensive approach to tackle violence against women from its roots, urging the nation to confront its history of violence more assertively.
Criticism and Ongoing Investigation
The President’s remarks come amid mounting criticism of the government’s handling of crimes against women. The Kolkata incident has intensified scrutiny over the effectiveness of existing measures and the overall response to violence against women.
A civic volunteer has been detained in connection with the case, but the victim’s family alleges that the crime involved multiple perpetrators in a gang rape. The Supreme Court has intervened by ordering the formation of a national task force to explore ways to enhance security for healthcare workers, describing the incident as one that has “shocked the conscience of the nation.”
