Tamil Nadu’s Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is under scrutiny as the Tuticorin police have filed a case against him for alleged derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The controversy arose from a video in which Minister Radhakrishnan was heard saying, “Aren’t you those who wanted to kill Kamaraj when he was sleeping,” in an apparent response to PM Modi’s mention of Congress icon K Kamaraj at a recent rally. The video, whose authenticity NDTV couldn’t independently verify, has led to the minister being booked under section 294B for using obscene words in public, based on a complaint by a BJP functionary.
The state BJP has escalated the issue by approaching the Election Commission, seeking action against Minister Radhakrishnan for his comments. BJP state Chief Annamalai condemned the DMK’s behavior, calling it “uncouth” and criticizing the lack of intervention by DMK MP Kanimozhi, who was present at the event.
K Kamaraj, a revered former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, was praised by PM Modi at a rally in Salem, where the PM highlighted Kamaraj’s honesty and revolutionary initiatives such as mid-day meals as inspirations for his own work.
In response to PM Modi’s remarks, Minister Radhakrishnan targeted the Prime Minister in the video, saying, “You speak as if Kamaraj hugged you,” sparking further controversy.
This incident adds to Minister Radhakrishnan’s history of controversy, including a recent ad campaign featuring the Chinese flag on a rocket, which stirred a heated debate.
As of now, the DMK has not issued a response to the allegations against Minister Radhakrishnan, setting the stage for potential political repercussions in Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape.
